DALLAS,Texas — Just hours after signing a new four-year, $240 million contract, Dak Prescott guided the Dallas Cowboys to a decisive 33-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns in their season opener on Sunday. The Cowboys' defense dominated Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, resulting in Prescott's touchdown pass and ruining his return to the field.

After months of speculation regarding his future in Dallas, Prescott has become the first NFL player to earn an average of $60 million per season due to his contract. Prescott's extension guarantees his continued leadership of a Cowboys squad with 12 victories in the previous three seasons. Following the signing of the agreement, Prescott expressed his resolve to guide the Cowboys to a Super Bowl victory and conclude the franchise's championship futility.

To conclude the contest, Prescott completed 19 of 32 passes for 179 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Brandin Cooks in the first quarter. Prescott remained on the sidelines for most of the second half as the Cowboys established a commanding lead.

Early in the third quarter, the Cowboys established a 27-3 lead after KaVontae Turpin electrified the audience with a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown. Last season, Dallas' defense, which was among the league's finest, consistently applied pressure to Watson, resulting in him making poor throws and restricting his ability to scramble.

Watson, who was playing in his first game since serving an 11-game suspension last year, encountered difficulty against the Cowboys' pass rush. He threw an interception and completed only 17 of 33 passes, accumulating 205 yards. Additionally, Watson was sacked four times, with Dallas defensive end Micah Parsons spearheading the attack.

Cleveland's offense did not establish a consistent rhythm until the fourth quarter when Watson connected with Amari Cooper on a 15-yard touchdown pass. Prescott had been following the game from the sideline for an extended period, and Dallas had already secured the victory.

The Cowboys' victory establishes a strong foundation for the season, as Prescott assumes the reigns under a new contract. "We have unfinished business," Prescott stated following the contest.

Prescott believes his team is something special and is proud to be part of it.

Cleveland will need to regroup after a difficult start to their season, while Dallas will aim to improve upon this performance as they prepare for their Week 2 matchup.

Dak Prescott became the highest-paid athlete in the NFL with a new four-year, $240 million contract from the Dallas Cowboys just hours before their season opener. The contract, valued at an average of $60 million annually, includes a $231 million guarantee.

Prescott, approaching the conclusion of his previous $160 million contract, expressed his enthusiasm for the prospect of remaining with the team. “I wanted to become a Cowboy, and I achieved that goal,” Prescott stated.

The agreement surpasses Deshaun Watson's previous record for guaranteed money by $1 million.
