Matt Bush, a former pitcher for the Texas Rangers, was detained and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) after a collision in Arlington on Friday night. According to Arlington police, Bush, 38, initiated a multi-vehicle collision by disregarding a red light before attempting to escape the scene.
The incident took place when Arlington police attempted to stop Bush's 2023 Lincoln Aviator on Pioneer Parkway due to erratic driving. Bush proceeded at a rapid pace, rather than halting. The Aviator collided with a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado at the intersection of East Pioneer Parkway and South Collins Street shortly thereafter. The Aviator subsequently collided with a 2010 GMC Yukon and a 2008 Toyota Corolla, both of which were halted at the light.
Bush departed his vehicle and attempted to flee the scene, according to witnesses. However, bystanders pursued him and apprehended him until the authorities arrived. Bush and the Silverado driver were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Bush's behavior and statements at the site led the police to suspect that he was under the influence of alcohol. Bush declined to participate in a roadside sobriety test and to engage in a conversation with investigators regarding the accident. A blood sample was obtained by the authorities for subsequent examination.
This is not Bush's initial encounter with the law. The San Diego Padres' 2004 first-round draft pick has a history of alcohol-related legal issues. Following a 2012 drunken driving accident in Florida that resulted in the grievous injuries of a 72-year-old motorcyclist, he served 39 months of a 51-month prison sentence. Bush has played for the Texas Rangers and, most recently, the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023.
Bush was incarcerated in Arlington City Jail and is currently facing accusations of evading arrest, accident involving injury, and driving while intoxicated.
