In 2022, drug overdoses resulted in more than 111,000 fatalities in the United States, with mortality occurring every five minutes.

Marissa Ladatto, a 21-year-old college student from Duncanville, was one of the victims who passed away due to a fentanyl overdose shortly before midnight on December 30, 2022.

Her parents, Amy Brewer and Mark Garbade, are mourning the loss of their only child, contemplating the shattered aspirations of her future family, wedding, and graduation.

Dallas County's overdose crisis is a component of a more extensive epidemic that is affecting communities across the country as the prevalence of fentanyl—a synthetic opioid that is significantly more potent than morphine—continues to increase.

In 2022, the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department responded to more than 3,000 overdose inquiries, a significant increase from the 583 incidents reported in 2007. The county's data suggests that the number of deaths associated with fentanyl has increased, and officials have emphasized the imperative need for heightened awareness and intervention strategies.

Local health authorities are intensifying their efforts to address the crisis, which includes the distribution of naloxone, a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses.

Community leaders are advocating for improved education and resources to prevent future calamities and address the increasing fentanyl threat in Dallas County as families such as Ladatto's navigate their losses.
