DALLAS (AP) — Dallas police and school officials have verified that a freshman girl at South Oak Cliff High School was struck by a bullet in a park near the campus on Monday afternoon.

The Dallas Police Department responded to the gunfire at Renaissance Park, which is located directly across the street from the school, at approximately 4:25 p.m. According to a spokesperson for Dallas ISD, the 9th-grade student was struck shortly before dismissal and promptly fled to the football field for assistance.

The girl is anticipated to recover, according to officials. Preliminary reports indicate that she was not the intended target, but rather an unwitting bystander. The gunfire was the result of a fight that broke out at the park during school hours, during which a group of students had reportedly congregated.

The Dallas Police Department delayed school dismissals during the preliminary phases of the investigation.

Numerous gunfire were reported by residents of the vicinity. Roberto Arellano, who resides in the vicinity, reported to WFAA that he heard four or five gunfire before the arrival of the police.

Sancy Montgomery, the mother of a South Oak Cliff junior, described the dread she experienced when her son contacted her. "He was hollering and crying, 'Somebody just got shot!'" she reported. "Not knowing what was happening, that's the last call I’d ever want to receive."

Deveen Ivroy, her son, stated that the school was placed on lockdown immediately following the incident. "It was scary because it was right by the school," he asserted.

Some students feared the worst, as they used the same path to school, which could have been them.

The school district has announced that beginning on Tuesday, pupils at South Oak Cliff High School will have access to mental health resources.

As the investigation progresses, authorities strongly encourage anyone with knowledge to step forward. At now, law enforcement authorities have not apprehended any individual involved in the shooting incident.
