Royal China, a valued Chinese restaurant in Dallas, is commemorating its 50th anniversary this year. The family-owned eatery, which has been a fixture at the intersection of Preston and Royal for decades, was founded in 1974 by Buck Shu-Chang Kao. Despite facing numerous challenges, the establishment has managed to preserve its traditional origins.

George Kao, Buck's son, promptly entered the family business upon his relocation to the United States. Together with his wife, April, they committed themselves to the operation and expansion of Royal China, where they raised their daughters, Joyuan and Jolene, in the vibrant, inviting atmosphere of the restaurant. Despite the fact that the neighborhood has undergone significant changes over the years, Royal China remains one of the original stores that has endured.

The Kao family has maintained the business's prosperity in the face of numerous challenges, such as a recession, an adjacent fire, and a tornado. George attributes their success to their passion and perseverance as he warmly greets customers at the door. "Restaurants are a demanding business, but you have to put your heart into it," according to him.

April has been instrumental in the transformation of Royal China to meet the demands of contemporary consumers. She has implemented a hand-pulled noodle bar and a dumpling bar, which have imbued the menu with new energy while maintaining its traditional roots. During their golden anniversary celebration, the Kao family contemplates their voyage, embracing their heritage and anticipating new opportunities.
